Kristin Schreiber MD, PhD

Vice Chair of Faculty Development

Pronouns: she/her/hers

Kristin L. Schreiber, MD/PhD, is an Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School, and Vice Chair of Faculty Development in the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative, and Pain Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston since 2022. She completed her MD and a PhD in Neuroscience at the University of Minnesota, investigating reciprocal neural-immune interactions involved in infection and the development of persistent pain. She completed residency training at the University of Pittsburgh, and fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, where she practices clinically as a Regional Anesthesiologist. Her research program investigates the development of chronic pain after surgical injury, using psychosocial and psychophysical assessment tools, in addition to biomarkers, clinical characteristics, and socio-demographics, to predict who is most at risk. Her perioperative interventional studies incorporate this dense biopsychosocial assessment of individual patients into their design, to allow more nuanced assessment of differential efficacy of preventive perioperative interventions among patients, in order to ultimately inform more personalized care. In her quantitative sensory testing lab, she investigates differences in pain processing among individuals, including how subjective pain relates to changes in physiology, and how pain may be modulated by non-opioid analgesic techniques, ranging from regional anesthetic techniques to music.

Her goals as VC of Faculty development have been to actively support the academic development of individuals in the department. The diversity of this collection of uniquely talented individuals fuels both the success of our department as a whole, but also makes it a uniquely and enjoyable place to do work. This includes diversity not only of gender, ethnicity, race or sexual orientation, but also of specialty, approach, interest, strengths, background, career focus, academic rank, sense of humor, and point of view. She has prioritized increasing the recognition and visibility of individuals in our department and their diverse accomplishments. She heads an efficient Promotions team, as well as co-leads a Time Committee, to work on equitably evaluating the assignment of non-clinical time in a merit-based way. One example is the establishment of Faculty Development Starter Grants, 5 of which were awarded in 2024. She has cultivated a personalized and robust career conference system, with effective mentor pairings, and helped to establish peer mentoring groups in a number of cross divisional areas of interest.
